A material history of 15th-17th century paper used for
Icelandic handwritten and printed texts from
production to use and reuse
ABOUT EARLY PAPER
IN ICELAND
In two projects we analyse the life cycle of paper, starting with its production on the European continent, following up on its use as text-bearing objects and ending with its reuse in archives and libraries, for example as binding material or as wrappers for Árni Magnússon's apographs.

Life of Paper runs from 1 July 2022 until 30 June 2025 and is funded by Rannís under the grant number 228695-051.

Paper Trails ran from 1 April 2018 until 31 March 2021 and was funded by Rannis under the grant number 184961-051.

Our theoretical background is deeply rooted in material philology, object biography and paper history. We hope to contribute towards manuscript and book history, history of objects and collections, social and economic history and material philology.
